Natures Hideaway, Middle Lagoon, West Australia

After a refreshing swim and shower we bade goodbye to Kooljaman and headed South about 60 Km before turning West towards our next destination, Natures Hideaway at Middle Lagoon. This was a dirt track of about 30 Km which was quite interesting as very narrow with deep sand, and with some large undulations. We felt like we were on a roller coaster at one stage. We still made good time as the corrugation wasn't too bad and there weren't that many rocky patches.

Once again we were met with a rustic camping experience although there was surprisingly quite a few large caravans. The facilities are fairly basic and our site only had limited shade. We put our pullout awning on the Jeep to good use during our stay for some additional shaded area. The whole campground consists primarily of red dust and sand so was difficult to keep anything clean. The water needed to be boiled except for a filtered water connection at the amenity blocks. Amenity blocks were fairly basic but kept quite clean. I'll give them 3 Stars given the location.

Middle Lagoon would primarily be a fishing destination, with a number of our neighbours there for extended stays and spending everyday out on their boats. We were lucky enough to score some free Spanish Emperor fillets from a family that had just returned from a Charter. They had done very well and couldn't eat or store all of their catch. We got several steaks and enjoyed a few for lunch the day of our arrival. Had enough to freeze for at least 3 more meals. Lucky us!

After lunch we set out to explore the nearest beach (Ridge Beach). This was a very short walk from our campground and again lovely blue, clear water.

As mentioned in other posts in the Kimberley region the tides here are amazing. The picture above shows low tide from a lookout, and high tide is right up to the seaweed at the bottom of the sand cliffs in the distance. Swimming at high tide was a lot shorter walk and we had less rocks to contend with. We enjoyed a few swims during the afternoon before enjoying a lovely sunset from a communal viewing area where people gather for afternoon drinks. The sky was a bit cloudy and resulted in one of our favourite sunsets of our adventure.

Sunday we enjoyed a relaxed start with another swim to kick-start our morning. Tide was fairly high at this point. Later in the morning we took a drive out to Whale Song which is a small cafe overlooking another beautiful Kimberley bay. We enjoyed a couple of lovely Mango Crush drinks on the veranda overlooking the ocean. The colours here are beautiful!

The afternoon saw us enjoy another swim and a walk along the Middle Lagoon Beach. The walk was close to low tide and we saw some lovely sand patterns and armies of little blue crabs.

We returned to our campground for a nice BBQ dinner and a relaxing evening. Monday morning saw us enjoy a big breakfast on the BBQ before heading down to spend a few hours at the beach. High tide again so short walk and lovely sandy swimming area. We spent some time relaxing in the shade after lunch doing some reading. We decided to make a return trip to Whale Song for another Mango treat but discovered too late that they closed at 3PM. We did a short walk to a lookout point on the North west side of the campsite in the late afternoon. The tide was quite low and you could really appreciate the difference once more between the high/low tides.

We have really enjoyed our visit to Middle Lagoon. Yet another beautiful part of the Dampier Peninsula North of Broome. We are however looking forward to being able to shower without having to walk through red dirt!
