April 10th, 2012- Wyandra Free Camp- Wyandra

Tuesday morning we were packed up and heading North again by 8:30AM. Had a nice drive with little traffic and lots of blowing tumbleweeds. The wind was actually blowing behind us for a change which was nice on the fuel economy. The tumbleweeds were blown up along the fence lines to our West making for an interesting pattern.

We stopped at Barringun for morning tea before Sandra took over the driving for a while. The road was quite bumpy for much of the trip which was a bit challenging with the caravans and the narrow road. Had a funny incident while Sandra was driving when we passed a road train full of cattle coming around the corner from the opposite direction. The windshield was covered with liquid which Sandra kindly informed me was cattle pee! Thank goodness she didn't have her window open although could have been pretty funny from the passenger seat! We saw lots more Emus and also a couple of Brolgas along the way.

We stopped for lunch in Cunnamulla. Had our pictures with the Cunnamulla Fella statue and did a brief walking tour of the downtown. Quite a nice little community. Had a picnic lunch in the park beside the Visitor Centre before heading North again.

Stopped at Wyandra at a free campsite behind the State School. Quite a nice little area with toilets and hot showers. Donation box for camp fees. They are trying to start a caravan park in Wyandra but even though they are very reasonable at $15/night, I think they will struggle as long as the free camp stays open. There is supposed to be a maximum of 3 caravans but there were about six the night we stayed (None at the caravan park). I imagine the caravan park will be working to shut down or limit the free camp.

We did a quick walking tour of the town before walking about 1KM to the Warrego River. Walked across the bridge and down to an area called "The Beach" Not much to look at with the high muddy waters resulting from the floods. Another cool night.
