September 5th, 2011- Mary River Roadhouse-South Kakadu

Monday morning saw us pack up and leave Jabiru. We drove south along the Kakadu about 150km to just outside the park entrance. We set up at Mary River Roadhouse Campground. The amenities were clean but it's not likely we would ever stay there again. Very open with little shade, very hot, thousands of flies, and some ramshackle shacks where a number of permanents lived.

We set up and had lunch before all driving out to Gunlom Falls. This was just back into the park and then 37km south east on an unsealed and at times rough road into the campground/falls. The falls were beautiful although again not much water because of the lateness in Dry Season. Terry, Di, Sandra, and I enjoyed a lovely swim at the plunge pool at the base of the falls. There were several familie there with young children enjoying the cool waters. Carol and Stephen braced the heat to climb to the top of the falls where there was a second plunge pool. They said it was very nice.

After a nice swim and a bit of relaxation we piled back in the vehicle for the return journey. Enjoyed a nice dinner with our few remaining supplies. Will be really happy to go shopping in Katherine tomorrow.
