The Pumphouse Campground on Arthur's Lake

After our visit to "The Wall" on Sunday morning we hit the road again. We travelled North East through Bronte Park and Miena before arriving at Arthur's Lake. The trip from Bronte Park to Miena was gravel road but traffic was light and I found it less stressful than the paved highway we had left behind. Miena is located on a large lake called "The Great Lake" but again viewing areas were limited.

We arrived at the Pumphouse campground just before lunch. It was fairly busy being a long weekend in Tasmania but we were able to find two sites together backing onto the lake. Quite a picturesque little campground with pit toilets and showers ($2). The camp manager was a funny fellow called "Onions" Cost was $4/person per day which was quite reasonable. The weather was mostly good on Sunday as well which was a bit of a surprise as wet weather had been forecast. No Telstra service was the only real downside of the campground. We all enjoyed a quiet afternoon and a BBQ.

Monday morning we took a drive to the Waddamana Power station. This was the first Hydro Electric power station in Australia and again was built with great foresight and effort in the early 1900s. We did a free tour in the museum there which was very interesting and well worth a visit. Stephen ran into some other Ransleys there who he didn't know about. Had a bit of a visit and agreed to stop in for a visit when we are near their home at St. Helens. What a small world as this museum is truly in the middle of nowhere! We enjoyed a few stops around the drive which highlighted different aspects of the Hydro system (Dams, canals, tramway location etc)

On the return journey we stopped in to see the Steppes Sculptures. Not much and wouldn't really recommend stopping there to be honest.

Tuesday we did another drive back towards Miena. Stopped at a campsite along the water and a lookout at the dam location. A few nicer homes here but still very basic and rocks are everywhere. A very different landscape! Stopped along our return trip for a bit of contact with the outside world while we were in Telstra coverage. We enjoyed another warmish (by Tasmania standards) afternoon and Pizza dinner with the Ransleys. Not a lot to see in this area other than the Power station but the lake was a nice setting to camp by for a few days.
