May 10th, 2012- Campsite at Gilbert River-Savanah Way

Thursday morning saw us say our goodbyes to family and friends for the next leg of our journey. We were spoiled with some more fish fillets from Bruce, Margaret, Rhonda, & Pete before leaving. We have a good selection of fish in our freezer as we leave Karumba albeit not from our own efforts. The rest of the gang is staying until the weekend to complete their two weeks. We headed south as far as Normanton before heading East on the Savanah Highway towards Cairns. Had a couple of Brolgas walk slowly along the road in front of us on our way. Our first stop was Black Bull Siding where the Gulflander Train was stopped for morning tea. We had ours as well.

From there we continued East to the small town of Croydon. This is a lovely old historic gold mining town. The people we met at the visitor centre were very friendly and the visitor centre is wonderful for a small town. We watched a short movie about the history of Croydon before touring the museum portion of the Visitor Centre. There were a number of interesting metal sculptures at the visitor centre and throughout the town which Carol and Sandra really appreciated.

We enjoyed lunch in  a nice park across from the visitor centre before walking around the town touring a number of historic buildings. The Court House and Police Station/Gaol were highlights. Allow yourself a couple of hours to tour Croydon should you ever pass through this way.

We continued East for another 75KM stopping at a free camp on the West side of the Gilbert River. A nice large grassy area with a few other caravans joining us overnight. We walked across the one lane bridge over the river. Would be quite a site in full flood as is a very wide river bed and you can see where the water goes over the bridge. We cooked up some of the Sooty Grunter we had received in Karumba and it was very good! Enjoyed a quiet night and a few drinks with the Ransleys. Retired to our respective caravans early as the bugs came out in force after dark.
