October 2nd & 3rd, 2011-Roebuck Bay Caravan Park-Broome

Sunday October 2nd saw us pack up at Derby and head off to Broome. Very excited as is one of the places Sandra has been looking forward to since I suggested going on the big adventure. The road to Broome while good is quite boring. Long straight stretches with not a lot to see on either side of the road. We arrived in Broome about 11AM and checked in at the Roebuck Bay Caravan Park. This caravan park qualifies for both our worst and best list! The Caravan Park itself is probably one of the worst we have stayed at with very poor and unclean amenities; and a number of permanent units that are frankly quite shocking. However all is forgotten if you get a prime waterfront site like ours. It is without a doubt our best view yet with a 50 foot walk to the water's edge (at high tide). Given that the view and setting is incredible; and that we are fully self contained with showers and toilets, we decided to book in for two weeks despite the park's many shortcomings.

This is the only caravan park in Broome that is actually located on the water. There are a number of nice ones (reportedly) at Cable Beach but they are located well back and you need to negotiate sand dunes to reach the water. Roebuck Bay is on the inlet side of Broome and the water is much quieter and we think much prettier than the more famous Cable Beach. We got set up in the afternoon, enjoyed a swim in the crystal blue/green waters, and a long walk out on the flats on low tide in the evening. The tides literally go out for kilometers as it is very flat.

Monday we woke up to the beautiful sunrise above out our caravan window. Di, Sandra, and I went for another long walk on the mud flats of low tide. We saw some interesting sea creatures and Di succeeded in getting stuck in the mud. We walked out a couple of kilometres on the low tide.

The four of us did some touring around Broome in the morning. We first explored Cable Beach which was nice but we didn't think it was as nice as Roebuck Bay and it is much busier.

We then went up and walked out the jetty at the Port. Quite a long jetty and some beautiful views!

We then travelled west to Gantheaume Point where the lighthouse is located. Beautiful house there for the lighthouse keeper and amazing red rock formations next to the blue waters. Cable Beach in the distance looks incredible. Wow!

We spent the afternoon doing some shopping. Broome is quite a nice community so far; although it is quite spread out. Sandra and I are leaving the caravan here with Di & Terry for a few days while we travel up to Cape Leveque for our anniversary. Will close off this post and start our Broome adventure again when we return. Cheers!
