March 30th & 31st, 2011- Tenterfield

March 30th saw us get an early start for Tenterfield. We travelled to Ballina, then through Lismore to Casino on the Bruxner Highway. We filled up with diesel there and set off across the Bruxner Highway to Tenterfield. The road was as advertised quite bumpy, winding, and hilly; especially the last 40Km into Tenterfield. The 125Km took us 2 hours to complete, but luckily with not much other traffic on the road.

Arrived in Tenterfield just after noon and booked into Tenterfield Lodge Caravan Park which is near the Railroad Museum. A bit off the highway so a bit quieter than some of the others. Discovered that we had picked a busy weekend at Tenterfield as the "Oracles of the Bush" was on. We got the last serviced site available for the 2 nights we wanted. Nice campground with full facilities and helpful owners.
We spent the afternoon touring Tenterfield town centre. Visited the Tenterfield Saddler, walked the downtown area, and toured the Railroad Museum. Very interesting history and a quaint beautiful town.

On Thursday morning we travelled North along the Mount Lindsay Road. We first stopped at Thunderbolt's Hideout. Short walk in and a very interesting rock formation. Had several exit and/or entry points which obviously made it a good hideaway.

From there we travelled to Boonoo Boonoo National Park to the falls. About 15Km on gravel/dirt but interesting view point as it drops away considerably at the falls viewpoint. The river bank we followed also showed some of the damage done by the floodwaters earlier this year with many trees knocked over.

Back in the car to Bald Rock National Park where we had a picnic lunch before starting our 2-3 hour walk to the top of Bald Rock. This is another amazing walk that should not be missed if you are in the area. The walk up leads you through a number of Rock Arches and incredilbe rock and plant formations. The view from the top is simply stunning! On our do not miss list! Sandra didn't quite make it to the very top as she found the last stretch to the summit too much for her nerves. Not too steep but it is very open at the top with nothing to stop you if you were to fall.  I have taken several photos but they really don't do justice to the views.

Friday morning we took a quick walk downtown to see if we could catch any performances of the Bush Poets. Nothing happening so we packed up and began the short journey to Glenn Innes. We will update from there shortly.

A couple of quick updates for our regular readers. Firstly, the Caravan Fridge has been working better on Gas so we are waiting until we return in early May to have it fixed at Newcastle. Secondly, our damaged Honda Civic has been restored to close to original condition after our daughter's accident. No word on the repair/replacement of the garage door that the room mates are taking turns running in to.
